37th Annual Cherry Pie Criterium
02-05-12
Napa, CA

The Cherry Pie Crit went off under excellent Northern California winter weather signaling the start of Michael David Winery racing. The famed P-shaped course had new paving throughout, a full-hairpin turn just after the finish line, a long sweeping left-hand turn, and a chicane that preceded an uphill climb to the finish line.

“…With 6 to go I worked my way toward the front only to be caught up in a crash. I didn’t go down but Sterling Magnell (biggest guy out there) slammed into my bars as he tried to avoid the crash. The force of his hit knocked my foot out and I was sent into the gutter. Trying to clip in with the adrenaline pumping that hard was difficult and I ended up at the back. I was having difficulty moving back up and was not able to get to the front in time. Ended up with a measly 27th placing but I’m safe and there are plenty more races to come…” ~ Nano Christensen P1/2 race

“..The field splinters and it is a mad dash for position. I get caught out a little due some bad cornering by individuals in front of me, but move up hard on the back stretch. Someone brakes going into the chicane and I’m forced back to mid-pack. Most riders at sprinting much too early, so I try to sweep around to the far shoulder and power my way up the hill. I cross the line in 10th, not as good of a final position as I had hoped for, but I’m pleased with the result after a hectic last lap…”
